What Is a Gold Kitty Scheme? How It Works Step by Step

By Sahil Singh, Founder · 30 September 2026 · 12 min read

It is draw day. The slip box is on the counter and a few members are standing around it. Before you pick, one of them asks a quiet question: "Was my slot in the box? I paid on the eighth." You open the register, then your UPI app, then the cash book. Everyone waits. That moment is the whole gold kitty scheme in one picture.

A gold kitty scheme is a group saving plan run by a jeweller. A fixed number of slots pay the same instalment every month, and one slot is picked in a draw each month. At the end, members redeem their value as jewellery. This guide walks through one month, step by step.

Quick answer: a gold kitty has a fixed number of slots and a fixed number of months. Each month members pay, the shop records the payments, a draw is held on a fixed date, the winner is announced, and the next month begins. What a winner receives is set by each shop. The kitty runs on trust in the record and in the draw, so the shop must be able to prove both.

What is a gold kitty scheme?

A gold kitty scheme is a saving plan where a group of customers join one kitty at a jewellery shop. The kitty has a fixed number of slots and a fixed number of months. Every slot pays the same instalment each month, one slot is picked in a monthly draw, and members redeem their value as jewellery at the end.

The word "kitty" is used in different ways in different towns. Some shops call any monthly saving plan a kitty. In this guide, a kitty means a plan with slots and a monthly draw. If you want the wider picture first, read our guide on what a gold saving scheme is and how it runs from joining to redemption.

Six words come up again and again in any kitty. The table below gives each one in plain language, so you and your staff use them the same way.

WordWhat it means
KittyOne scheme with a fixed number of slots and a fixed number of months
SlotOne share in the kitty. A member can hold more than one
InstalmentThe amount paid for each slot every month
DrawThe monthly event where one slot is picked
Grace periodThe extra days a member has to pay after the due date
MaturityThe end of the kitty, when members redeem their value as jewellery

One point from the table matters more than it looks. A member and a slot are not the same thing. One member can hold three slots. Each of those slots has its own number, its own payments and its own chance in the draw. Your record must be kept slot by slot, not member by member.

How does a gold kitty work, month by month?

A gold kitty works as one short cycle that repeats every month. Members pay their instalment, the shop records every payment, the draw is held on the fixed date, the winner is announced to all members, and the next month begins. The same five steps repeat until the kitty matures.

The picture below shows that loop. Learn one month well and you have learned the whole kitty.

The same five steps repeat every month until the kitty matures. Every step is a place where a manual kitty can slip.

Step 1: Members pay their instalment

Each slot owes one instalment by the due date. Some members pay cash at the counter. Some pay by UPI to the shop QR code. Some send money from a bank account and tell you later on WhatsApp. A member with three slots may pay for all three in one amount.

This is the first place a manual kitty can slip. A UPI payment arrives with no name on it, or with the name of the son who paid for his mother. Unless someone matches it the same day, it becomes a puzzle at month end.

Step 2: The shop records every payment

Every payment needs three things: the slot number, the date, and a receipt number. Write it down when the money arrives, not in the evening from memory. Give the member a receipt every time, even if they say they do not need one.

Matching payments means checking that the money you received agrees with what your record says, payment by payment. Accountants call this reconciliation. In a kitty it is not a month end job. It has to be finished before the draw, because the draw depends on it.

Step 3: The draw is held on the fixed date

The draw date should be the same every month and known to every member from the first day. Before the draw, the shop makes the list of slots that are allowed in it. Slots that have already won are out. Your rules decide what happens to a slot that has not paid.

Make that list before the draw and do not change it after. In GoldKitty this is called a frozen eligible list. The slips are printed from that list, and overdue slots sit out until their dues are cleared. On paper you can do the same thing: write the list, sign it, date it, and show it to the members present.

Step 4: The winner is announced to all

Announce the winning slot number to every member, not only to the winner. Do it on the same day. A result that reaches members a week later, by word of mouth, invites doubt even when the draw was fully honest.

Record the draw on video and share it with members. It costs nothing and it answers the question before anyone asks it.

Step 5: The next month begins

After the draw, update the record. Mark the winning slot as won. Carry forward any slot that is overdue. Set the next due date. Then the cycle starts again.

The common slip here is small but costly. Nobody marks the winning slot, so next month a reminder goes to a member who has already won, or the slip goes back in the box. Both are hard to explain in front of other members.

What happens to a slot after the draw?

After each draw there are two kinds of slots: those that have not won yet, and the one that won. What each receives is set by the terms of that kitty, and terms differ from shop to shop. The two columns below show how the example kitty in our own product, GoldKitty, is set up.

What happens to a slot after the draw A slot that has not won yetKeeps paying the monthly instalmentStays in every future drawRedeems its full value at maturityA slot that winsStops being billed from that monthRemaining instalments are covered by the storeLeaves all future drawsStill redeems its full value at maturity
This is how the kitty in our own product behaves. Nobody loses: every slot redeems its full value at maturity.

A slot that has not won yet

In the GoldKitty example, a slot that has not won yet does three things. It keeps paying the monthly instalment. It stays in every future draw. It redeems its full value at maturity. So a member who never wins a single draw still gets the jewellery value they saved for.

A slot that wins

In the same example, a slot that wins stops being billed from that month. Its remaining instalments are covered by the store. It leaves all future draws, so it cannot win twice. It still redeems its full value at maturity. If the member holds other slots, those carry on as normal.

This is one way to set up a kitty, not a universal rule. Some shops give the winner something different. What matters is that your terms are written down, given to every member, and applied the same way every month.

A worked example, with example numbers

GoldKitty shows its features on one example kitty: 100 slots, 15 monthly draws, and a full value of ₹45,000 per slot. That works out to an example instalment of ₹3,000 a month for each slot. These are example figures from the product page, not advice on what your kitty should be.

Now look at the cost to the shop. If one slot wins each month, the early winners have many instalments left for the store to cover and the last winner has none. Across the full example kitty that cover adds up to ₹3,15,000, which is 7 percent of the ₹45 lakh total value. The useful part is that you can work out this number on day one, before the first member joins.

Notice one more thing in the example. With 100 slots and 15 draws, 15 slots win and 85 do not. So most of your members will never win. They stay happy only if the promise to a non winning slot is clear, in writing, and kept at maturity.

How is a gold kitty different from a plain gold saving scheme?

A plain gold saving scheme is an agreement between the shop and one customer, who pays monthly and buys jewellery at the end. A gold kitty is a group with a fixed number of slots and a monthly draw. The draw adds excitement, and it also adds a second thing the shop must keep honest and be able to prove.

A kitty runs on trust: what must your shop be able to prove?

Your shop must be able to prove five things at any time: that each payment was received, that the record is the same on both sides, which slots were in the draw, that the result was not changed afterwards, and what each slot will receive at maturity. If you can show all five, the kitty is safe.

We built GoldKitty with a working jewellery store, and one lesson came out of that counter again and again. The software does not run the scheme, trust does. Every tool worth having turns a promise into a record nobody can argue with. Here is the same list as a checklist you can use today.

  1. The payment. Can you show a numbered receipt for any payment, on any slot, within a minute? Are the receipt numbers in order, with no gaps?
  2. The same record on both sides. If a member opens their diary or their phone, does it show the same payments as your register?
  3. The draw list. Can you show which slots were in the box for last month, and that the list was fixed before the draw?
  4. The result. Can you show the result as it was written on the day? If a correction was ever made, is the original still visible?
  5. The promise. Can a member see in writing what their slot gets if it wins, and what it gets if it never wins?

Any "no" on this list is your weak point. Fix that one first. We cover the wider reasons in our post on why jewellers are moving the kitty from the register to software.

Common mistakes in running a gold kitty

Most kitty problems do not come from dishonesty. They come from small gaps that pile up over the months.

Each of these also costs money, through missed instalments, unrecorded cash and wrong totals. We go through them one by one in where a manual gold scheme leaks money and how to stop it.

Kitty terms and draw rules are not the same everywhere

There is no single standard kitty. The number of slots, the number of months, the instalment, the grace period and the winner benefit are all chosen by the shop. Two shops on the same street can run two very different kitties.

The law is also not the same everywhere. Rules on saving schemes and on draws differ by country and by state. We are not lawyers and this guide is not legal advice. Before you start a kitty, or change one, confirm the rules with your own adviser in your area. Then write your terms to match.

This is why GoldKitty is modular. It is set up for each shop according to its country and its offer, so the rules of your kitty are your rules. Payments go through local payment gateways, set up to follow the banking guidelines of that market. If you are still planning your first scheme, our step by step guide to starting a gold saving scheme in your shop covers the rules to write down before the first member joins.

When you do not need software for a kitty

Not every kitty needs an app. If your kitty is small, you know every member by name, most payments are cash at the counter, and the draw is held in front of members, a careful paper register can do the job. Add a numbered receipt book and a signed draw list and you are in good shape.

Software starts to earn its cost when one or more of these is true:

If that sounds like your shop, have a look at GoldKitty, our gold kitty software for jewellers. It is white label, which means your members see your shop's name and logo, not ours. Cash, counter UPI and in app payments land in one list. Members without the app still get receipts, reminders and draw results on WhatsApp.

Some shops have an offer so unusual that no ready product fits. In that case a custom build through our mobile app development service may suit better. Remember that launching is a small part of the journey. Ask about the running cost and the upkeep, not only the build.

Our take

A kitty is a promise repeated every month. Members pay because they believe two things: that their payment is written down, and that the draw is fair. Your job is to make both easy to check. You can do that on paper if you are careful, and with software if the kitty has grown past what one person can remember.

If you do move to software, do not switch on draw day and hope. Run mock collections and a mock draw from start to finish first, on a copy of your own kitty. When you are ready, you can see how GoldKitty handles slots, payments and the monthly draw and ask for a demo on your own numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What is a gold kitty scheme?

A gold kitty scheme is a group saving plan run by a jeweller. It has a fixed number of slots and a fixed number of months. Each slot pays the same instalment every month, and the shop holds a draw each month where one slot is picked. At the end, called maturity, members redeem their value as jewellery. The exact terms are set by each shop.

How does a gold kitty work each month?

Every month follows the same five steps. Members pay their instalment. The shop records every payment and gives a receipt. The draw is held on the fixed date. The winner is announced to all members. Then the next month begins. These steps repeat until the kitty matures, so a shop that gets one month right can repeat it.

What happens when a slot wins the kitty lucky draw?

It depends on the terms of that shop. In the example kitty that GoldKitty is set up with, a winning slot stops being billed, the store covers its remaining instalments, the slot leaves all future draws, and it still redeems its full value at maturity. Other shops use other terms, so read the written rules of the kitty you join or run.

What happens to members who never win the draw?

In the GoldKitty example kitty, a slot that has not won keeps paying its monthly instalment, stays in every future draw, and redeems its full value at maturity. So a member who never wins still gets the jewellery value they saved for. A shop with different terms should state this point clearly in writing before anyone joins.

What is a kitty slot?

A slot is one share in the kitty. Each slot has its own number, its own monthly instalment and its own chance in the draw. A member can hold more than one slot if the shop allows it. The shop should keep a separate record for every slot, even when one member pays for several slots in a single payment.

How is a gold kitty different from a gold saving scheme?

A plain gold saving scheme is between the shop and one customer. The customer pays monthly and buys jewellery at the end. A kitty is a group with a fixed number of slots and a monthly draw. That adds two things the shop must manage: a fair draw that every member can check, and the cost of whatever the winner receives.

Is a gold kitty scheme legal?

We cannot give legal advice. Rules on saving schemes and on draws differ by country and by state, and they change over time. Before you start or change a kitty, confirm the rules with your own legal or tax adviser in your area. Then write your kitty terms to match, and set up your register or software to follow those terms.

What gold kitty rules should a shop write down?

Write down the number of slots, the number of months, the monthly instalment, the due date, the grace period, what happens to a late slot on draw day, how the draw is held, what a winner receives, what happens if a member leaves early, and what can be redeemed at maturity. Give every member a copy on the day they join.

What happens if a member pays late?

The shop decides this rule. In GoldKitty, the shop chooses a grace period. After it, the slot shows as overdue, the member gets a WhatsApp reminder, and the slot sits out of the draw until dues are cleared. Whatever your rule is, tell members before they join, and apply it the same way to every slot.

Do I need software to run a gold kitty?

Not always. A small kitty with members you know by name can run well on a careful paper register, a receipt book and a draw held in front of members. Software starts to pay for itself when payments come by cash and UPI together, when chasing takes hours, or when members begin to question the record or the draw.
